1. Find your water meter
2. Your water meter is inside. Is it in the basement, utility room, or under the sink?

3. Find the pipe. It should be about 1 inch in diameter and enter the house from a few feet underground before connecting the water meter. You'll also see a valve on it.
4. Is the pipe plastic?
Yes - It's made out of plastic
No - It's made out of metal

5. Scratch the pipe. Use a key or coin to scratch the pipe close to where it enters the house through the wall, Usually from a few feet underground. What color is it underneath?
Orange like a shiny penny
silver or gray

6. Is the pipe hard to scratch?
Soft - It was really easy to scratch
Hard - It wasn't that easy to scratch

7. Use a magnet. Try the magnet on it - does it stick?
